Trauma Surgery

Greenville Memorial Hospital of Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center is one of only four Level 1 Trauma Centers in South Carolina. A level 1 category is the highest level of care provided by trauma services as designated by South Carolina DHEC. A level 1 designation means there is a multidisciplinary team of highly trained specialists in the Trauma Center 24/7 waiting for you to arrive in need of medical attention.

Each year, over 1500 trauma patients are seen by the surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, respiratory therapists, radiology and lab technicians, and residents that make up the GHS Trauma Team.

Attendings in trauma surgery are available at Greenville Memorial Hospital 24 hours a day for consultation or referral regarding patients with single or multi-system injury. The surgeons are responsible for the global management of all patients admitted to the trauma service beginning with assessment and stabilization, intensive care unit stay, discharge, and post discharge follow-up.

Essential for the quality of trauma care provided by GHS are it facilities. The facilities include 2 resuscitation bays, 14 bed neuro trauma ICU, bed critical care emergency room, operating rooms available around the clock, and a post trauma recovery unit.

GHS trauma service area includes Greenville, Pickens, Oconee, Laurens, and parts of Anderson county. Secondary service area expands into northern Georgia, southwestern North Carolina, Anderson county, Abbeville, Greenwood, Newberry, Union, and Spartanburg counties. GMH also accepts transfers from other certified trauma centers for subspecialty services not offered at other hospitals, including orthopedics, pediatrics, and neurosurgical services.
