Thoracic Surgery

Thoracic surgery includes operations for diseases of the chest. This may involve either benign or malignant conditions of the lung, pleura, esophagus, or mediastinum. The Division of Thoracic Surgery at Greenville Health System (GHS) is one of the region's leading providers of thoracic surgery and care, drawing patients from Greenville, Asheville, Columbia, and surrounding areas.

Drs. William Bolton and James Stephenson coordinate the thoracic service at GHS. This service is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of patients with diseases of the thorax. Central to the treatment of thoracic malignancies is the utilization of the Thoracic Multidisciplinary Center (MDC) with the Cancer Treatment Center.

"With the GHS Thoracic Surgery service, patients have new, minimally invasive procedures available for diagnosis, staging, and treatment of lung and esophageal cancers."
James E. Stephenson, M.D.

The Thoracic Surgery division is committed to providing patients with high quality care utilizing the most advanced treatments and innovative techniques available.

Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery

Minimally invasive thoracic surgery procedures can provide a number of advantages for patients, including shorter hospital stays, less discomfort, and quicker recoveries. Drs. Bolton, Stephenson, and Wright (Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery) are among the few surgeons in the region who perform minimally invasive pulmonary and esophageal resections. Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is another commonly performed minimally invasive thoracic surgery procedure available at GHS.

Electromagnetic Bronchoscopy

GHS is the first in the region to offer Electromagnetic Bronchoscopy. This less invasive procedure is used to assist with the biopsy of lung nodules or masses. The outpatient procedure uses GPS-like technology to locate and biopsy suspicious areas in the lung.

As one of the region's leading providers of thoracic surgery procedures, GHS draws patients from Greenville, Asheville, Columbia, and throughout the Southeast. For more information or to refer a patient to the Thoracic Surgery division, call 455-1200 for an appointment.
