Preparing for Surgery

At Greenville Health System (GHS), we understand that patients may have questions about how to prepare for surgery. The following information provides a guideline to help you in preparing for your procedure.

Pre-Admission Steps

To complete the admissions process, a staff member will call you to go over some necessary questions. You should receive this call prior to 6 p.m. on the day before your pre-assessment appointment. If you don't receive the call, please call us at (864) 797-1070.

Many insurance companies require prior approval, certification, or a second opinion before surgery. Please be sure to complete the requirements outlined by your insurance provider. Otherwise, the insurance company may reduce payment or refuse your claim.

Pre-Assessment Appointment

A pre-assessment appointment with an anesthesiologist and a registered nurse is required for all patients who will have anesthesia.  Laboratory work, an electrocardiogram (EKG), or a chest X-ray may also be required. Unless your doctor gives you other instructions, you can eat and drink normally before your pre-assessment appointment.

Information to bring to the appointment:
  • Your hospital insurance benefits card
  • Your pre-certification authorization number

  • Any papers or information given to you by your surgeon or your surgeon's office
  • A copy of the report from any recent lab work, chest X-rays or EKGs 

  • All medications you are currently taking

  • Your Universal Medication Form

Surgery Day


On the day of your procedure, be sure to follow all instructions provided by your surgeon and anesthesiologist. Don't eat or drink anything, not even water, after midnight on the day of surgery unless you've been told to do so. Don't smoke, chew gum or use mints after midnight, or take medications after midnight, unless instructed to do so by your doctor.


Please contact your surgeon if you experience a change in your physical condition occurs before surgery, such as a cold, persistent cough, fever, or significant change in the condition for which you are having surgery.

Be sure to arrive at the hospital at your scheduled appointment time. It is best to wear comfortable clothing that can be easily removed and folded. Don't wear jewelry or makeup and be sure to bring a case for your glasses or contacts.

What to bring for a hospital stay:

  • Pajamas or a nightgown
  • Brush and comb
  • Robe and slippers
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Shaving supplies 

What not to bring:

  • Jewelry or watches
  • Electronic devices
  • Large sums of money
 

Hospital Visitors


We want your loved ones to be comfortable as they support you during your surgery, however, we must ask that you limit visitors to one on your pre-assessment day and two on the day of surgery if you are going home the same day. If you will remain in the hospital following surgery, you may have more visitors.

Visitors will be given a copy of "Instructions for Families and Visitors" to direct them to the appropriate waiting area and give them an overview of visitor services.

Following surgery, you will be taken to the post-anesthesia recovery room and will remain in recovery for approximately two hours. Your family will be given status reports if the recovery stay is longer than usual.

Visitors are not allowed in the recovery room unless there is an unusual circumstance; however, parents of small children are allowed in the recovery room as soon as the child regains consciousness.

Your Care Partner may visit at any time at your request. A Care Partner is a spouse, partner, family member or close friend who is at least 18 years old. He or she is chosen by the patient to provide emotional, physical, educational, social and spiritual support. 

 All other visitors are asked to observe the normal visiting hours of 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. For patient safety, our facilities are locked from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Some areas, such as mother-baby and intensive care units, have special visiting hours.

Exceptions to these hours will be made when appropriate. Interested visitors should see a guest services representative for an exception to the normal visiting hours.



You will be provided with three visitation signs for your door - a no visitors sign, a Care Partner and immediate family sign and a Care Partner only sign.
