The Importance of Intervention
The GHS Breast Health Program encourages all women over 40 years of age to receive an annual mammogram, and to have abnormal results evaluated as soon as possible.Gayle Blouin, M.D., FACS, and Wendy Cornett, M.D., MHS, FACS, two members of the Department of Surgery who have developed specialized practice for the treatment of breast cancer patients, see a need to educate women about the importance of early intervention. Some women postpone seeing a doctor for a lump if they have recently had a normal mammogram. Others delay because they fear a diagnosis of cancer, Dr. Blouin said. "It's important that all of us in the physician community convey to them that breast cancer treatment is very successful and that most patients recover totally," she concluded.
