Bladder Health

Urologists of the Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center (GHS) Medical Staff are versed in all modes of therapy for bladder cancer, including laser resection. They perform bladder-sparing surgery whenever possible. If necessary, they perform radical removal of the bladder, followed by continent diversion. This procedure creates a neobladder from the intestine. In older patients and patients with cancer of the bladder neck, the ureter may be attached to an ileal conduit. GHS urologists also perform pubovaginal sling surgery for female urinary incontinence, using slings made of bovine collagen, human collagen and polypropylene. Bovine xenograft is preferred by some urologists who find it easier to work with than the human allograft. Because it is wide and pliable, the xenograft can be useful when the urologist is working with a gynecologist to cover a cystocele defect. |
